March 31st, 2009Waste Needs a Basket - So Chuck It

Photo via Chuck4Life.
About a decade ago I received a Muji waste basket as a birthday gift from a shall-be-unnamed family relative. My first thought was, “So-and-so is giving me a trashcan as a gift? AND it’s unassembled?” In typical Muji fashion, the waste basket was just three pieces - a large rectangle of corrugated cardboard, a recycled-plastic bottom, and a plastic ring, all in an IKEA-like flat pack. After I awkwardly assembled the wastecan, I put it under my desk, sure that it would last only a few weeks. Well….
A survey by Retrevo, a “matchmaker for people and electronics,” found that buying energy efficient products is important to consumers, though few would pay much of a premium for green products.

Did you know that the Massachusetts Military Reservation is installing wind turbines to power its groundwater remediation systems which pump and treat over 18 million gallons of groundwater per day? These projects will dramatically decrease both the cost and environmental footprint of this significant remediation effort.
The amount of power required to run the pump and treat systems at the Massachusetts Military Reservation is staggering, with electricity costs adding up to $2.7 million for fiscal year 2008. In order to reduce costs and environmental impact, the Massachusetts Military Reservation has already increased the efficiency of the systems by installing variable frequency drives, optimizing flow rates, matching pump sizes to the adjusted flow rates, replacing inefficient lighting, and shifting electric loads to low peak/low cost periods. These steps reduced overall power costs and environmental impacts, but were not enough to meet the projects’ green remediation goals.
Based on an evaluation of air emissions resulting from power use from conventional power plants, alternative energy technologies were explored. This resulted in the Air Force’s decision to install a large class (1500 kW) wind turbine at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The Army is in the planning stages and will likely do the same in the near future. The large class wind turbine will be 260 feet tall to the hub, and 390 feet tall from ground to the tip of the rotor blade.
Come to this joint committee meeting to hear the folks who are managing these projects talk about how the decision was made to install wind turbines, the steps taken so far, and what obstacles have arisen. Please see the Web site for more information.
