This is one of those comparison posts that that could draw many angry comments: like Could Hype Sell An Inferior Hybrid? - Ford Fusion versus Toyota Camry did. Please carefully read the caveats.

Investigators from Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburg PA, have made a Volt-type v.s. Prius-type design comparison which flags a big differentiator when emissions and efficiency are normallized: battery price, or, more proper…

Fuel Cell for Scoreboard University of South-Carolina
photo: University of South Carolina

I have to admit that I was thrilled to see this story as I am a resident of Columbia, S.C. (home to USC) and we aren’t often the “the world’s first” at much related to the environment. But it’s great to see that USC is making moves toward some greener technology for their athletic department especially with something as important as its scoreboard! Though there is still much work to be done and this is mostly an educational exercise, USC is proving that the potential to apply fuel cell technology across the board is there and ready …

February 28th, 2009TMNT Scene 5

A play through of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) the original arcade version release. This is a game that features quite the clever and cute quirkiness and wackiness of Konami side-scrollers and the turtles and all of their cast of enemies and allies.

This game was released originally in 1989 in arcades everywhere, prior to being ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991 with many different changes being made to it, such as:
1) The addition of two stages that were not in the arcade version: between the sewer scene and the parking garage scene, you fought in the zoo which was frozen over by a climate controller, and had to beat a polar bear in a bikers jacket. The other was between the factory and the Technodrome, where you went to a ninja house and fought a big ninja guy with a yamato spear who threw his head around.
B) All conversations and speak were removed from the game.
C) Pizza Hut had adverts in the second scene where the whole billboard was and then fell down to reveal two foot soldiers.
D) In the NES version, you got an extra life for every 200 kills.
E) In the NES version, you face Baxter Stockman as a fly at the end of the parking garage scene: in the arcade version you fight Bebop and Rocksteady again.

The laws protecting citizens from potentially dangerous cleaning and personal-care products remain absent, minimal, or rarely enforced.

February 28th, 2009Article: Garages

If we still rode horses every day, we’d never have a barn attached to the house because the animal odors would be objectionable. Yet houses routinely have an attached garage which contains much more unhealthy odors.

The majority of the balanced ventilation systems on the market are heat recovery ventilators (HRVs). Most HRVs consist of an insulated cabinet, a heat-recovery core, two fans, some ductwork, and a control. But not all HRVs are created equal.

In a typical forced-air system with leaky ducts and an inefficient filter, the ducts are usually contaminated with a wide variety of particulates and microorganisms-all directly exposed to the air being breathed by the occupants.

With unemployment at a record high, growth in green jobs is increasingly seen as a rare bright spot in a bleak landscape — a view shared by applicants, prospective employers and, unfortunately, scam artists preying on those eager to enter the new hot job market.

The United States has the largest automobile fleet in the world — three cars for every four people — and is near the bottom of the pack in the use of fuel-efficient vehicles. A national network of high-speed rail trains would reduce the air pollution caused by the nation’s automobile fleet while also eliminating travel time and saving commuters money.

Climate change will not be taken seriously until the media highlights its significance, say researchers at the University of Liverpool.

Dr Neil Gavin, from the School of Politics and Communication Studies, believes the way the media handles issues like climate change shapes the public’s perception of its importance. Limited coverage is unlikely to convince readers that climate change is a serious problem that warrants immediate and decisive action.

Pro-bike Billboard from Green Beer Company
Generally speaking, we TreeHuggers are not huge fans of billboards - especially when billboards have more rights than trees. But if they do or say cool green things, they tend to get a more sympathetic reception - take Lloyd’s round up of five sort-of green billboards. I’d like to throw New Belgium Brewery’s latest advertising into the mix too - largely because I tend to love everything New Belgium does. The bil…
