January 31st, 2009The Totoro Forest Project Art Exhibition In San Francisco
Image: The Resting Place by Luc Desmarchelier (detail)
Yesterday, when I wrote about Satoyama, I was delighted to discover the Totoro Forest Project Art Exhibition in San Francisco. What a wonderful idea - animators, anime artists and designers who have been inspired by the film My Neighbor Totoro joined together to help preserve precious forest just 40 km (24 miles) north west of Tokyo: a fund raising exhibition/auction to support the national trust Totoro Forest Foundation that Oscar winning film ma…

OneWorld.net - NEW YORK, Jan 30 (OneWorld.net) - Indigenous leaders from the Amazon basin are calling for intense international scrutiny of the massive abuse of their land, including deforestation, which is making them increasingly vulnerable to the devastating effects of global warming.
As the draft stimulus package winds its way through Congress, experts are noting that as expected there is a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and green jobs in the package, with a number of items directed at the building sector. Laudable as the proposals are, incentives targeting energy efficiency improvements in the commercial building sector seem to come up short.
We’ve been busy sending people to the five recent public meetings held by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on formaldehyde - all spurred by a 2008 petition by the Sierra Club and other health and environmental organizations.
Formaldehyde was the health culprit in the toxic trailers distributed to more than 140,000 families after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. I’ve mentioned this issue before in my column, too. Our work has even prompted EPA to schedule one more public meet…

What’s the Difference Between Marketing and Advertising
So many people think that marketing and advertising mean the same thing. More likely than not you hear these terms used interchangeably. However, marketing and advertising do indeed have their differences, and knowing them will help you promote your business better - especially in this current economic climate.
First of all, advertising is a paid, persuasive message. It’s a non-personal announcement of a business’s particular products and services. For the most part, advertising is more about creating or maintaining brand awareness, and its goals are broader and more long-term.
Let’s take a look at just some of the many examples of advertising:
• Newspapers, magazines, event programs and other types of print ads
• Billboards, signage and other types of outdoor media
• Internet ads
• TV, radio and other types of broadcast ads
Marketing, however, is a combination of well-thought-out tactics that are designed to bring buyers and sellers together, while advertising is just one part in the entire marketing process. A good analogy that many experts in the industry use is to consider advertising as just one slice of the entire marketing pie.
There are so many more components (or slices) to a comprehensive marketing campaign. These include, among other items:
• Market research
• Media planning
• Strategy
• Direct marketing
• eMarketing (including email campaigns)
• Public relations
As you can see, advertising is just a part of the many facets of a successful marketing campaign. When you put every component together, and you end up with a sound program that will attract and retain customers.
