responsibletravel.com member Peregrine Adventures and WWF-Australia aim to help save the threatened population of Grey-headed Albatross on the World Heritage-listed sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. The rabbit population has exploded to over 100,000, resulting in the island’s lush tussock grasses being severely depleted, causing erosion and large landslips – 20 landslips occurred in September 2006 alone, one of which killed hundreds of King Penguins. Unless the rabbit plague is controlled, the Grey-headed Albatross will undoubtedly be driven to extinction in Australia. Peregrine and WWF-Australia donated $100,000, in part raised through fund-raising auctions on board the company’s ships in Antarctica, to kick-start key parts of a pest-eradication plan developed by Tasmanian National Parks. Cameron bought a handbag while touring in China that read 'serve the people.' The slogan was associated with the Peruvian war against Maoist rebels where over 69,000 people were killed and did not go down well when she wore it in Peru. Of course no offence was intended, but again it shows how easy it is to inadvertently cause offence - reading up on places before you visit and using local guides is the best way to get a little more more out of your travels and avoid any unintended problems..Provides resources for job seekers and employers/recruiters in the wind energy field. The Intertribal Council On Utility Policy (COUP) and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe were presented with a World Clean Energy Award at an awards ceremony in Basel, Switzerland, June 15, 2007, for their wind power development plan.
The project plan, which began with the single 750 kW wind turbine, includes the coordinated assessment and ultimate build out 80 to 240 MWs of tribally-owned wind power on reservations in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Ultimately, some two dozen Great Plains Tribes could host 3,000 MW of Indian-owned wind power through out the Missouri River basin by 2015, according to the plan. More information about the wind plan is available from the Intertribal COUP.
